Washington Post's Allen: "At the moment, Republicans are thrilled because they have Senator Kerry being forced to put on his own ad, responding. They feel like he elevated the issue, threw gas on the fire talking by about it. A third of all of the money that the Swift Boat people raised was Friday, the day after ... Senator Kerry spoke."
More Allen: "By having all of the attention in this ad -- you know, on Friday, there were state jobs figures that were terrible. ... John Kerry did a health care event on Friday. Nobody's talking about health care and, you know, Senator Kerry's A, angry about this ad, and B, it clearly is hurting him, as you saw in this poll" ("IP," CNN, 8/22)

Il timing dell'operazione SBVT è stato precisissimo: Kerry aveva dichirato pubblicamente (a che scopo, poi?) che non avrebbe messo in onda spot in agosto per risparmiare in vista dei due mesi conclusivi, e il gruppo di veterani che lo accusa ha deciso di colpire proprio quando il candidato democratico aveva dichiarato che avrebbe abbassato la guardia. Non solo Kerry è stato costretto a cambiare i suoi piani e a consumare risorse che avrebbe preferito conservare, ma si è trovato impreparato a reagire e restio a farlo per non modificare la sua decisione di non mettere in onda spot in agosto.
