Interesse nella convention

Two weeks prior to the start of the Republican National Convention, a Pew Research Center poll finds that 53 percent of Americans aren't interested in following the GOP's New York extravaganza. Republicans can take some solace, however: Prior to Democrats' July convention in Boston, 63 percent of respondents said that event did not interest them.
Likewise, few Americans are fixating on the presidential race, the poll suggests. Thirty-two percent said they were following news about the candidates very closely, while 38 percent were following it "fairly closely," and 30 percent were following it "not too closely" or "not at all closely." In comparison, 52 percent said they were following news about high gasoline prices very closely, and 39 percent were following reports on Iraq with similar care.
That lack of interest in political news does not translate into apathy for the race itself, however. Sixty-nine percent said they had given "quite a lot" of thought to the upcoming election, and most voters have made up their minds: Just 21 percent said there was a chance they might shift their support by election day.

Se ce ne fosse bisogno, questi dati danno un'ulteriore conferma del fatto che la politica contemporanea ha bisogno di rinnovarsi. Le grandi cerimonie mediatiche non appassionano più (né i network, che riducono la copertura, né gli elettori), così come l'informazione sulla campagna elettorale è guardata con disinteresse (forse perché parla solo di performance e sondaggi, invece di affrontare i temi? Forse perché i politici non dicono quasi mai niente di significativo, e quando lo fanno cadono spesso in errori o promettono troppo?).
Eppure gli americani sono interessati, hanno pensato molto a questa campagna elettorale, in molti hanno già deciso. Sarebbero disponibili a ri-mobilitarsi, sarebbero pronti per un piccolo o grande evento che segni la campagna. Di certo le convention non lo sono e non lo saranno. Non resta che sperare nei dibattiti presidenziali, a meno che qualcuno non si inventi qualcosa all'ultimo minuto, ma mi pare improbabile.
